South Carolina: My Least Favorite State

Update (10:19 AM) But wait! Looks like there’s more woman-hating out of South Carolina this morning.

s.c. flag

South Carolina the #1 worst state for women. It’s the only state in the country that has amended its child abuse laws to specify that, for the purposes of that law, a fetus is a child from the moment of conception , though it is not medically a pregnancy until implantation, which occurs after conception. It lead the charge to prosecute pregnant women who give birth despite drug additions, ultimately resulting in the Supreme Court case Ferguson v.Charleston, which held that hospitals violate women’s Fourth Amendment right to be free of unreasonable searches when they turn drug tests ostensibly taken for medical purposes over the to the police to help them prosecute pregnant women.

Today, South Carolina secures its position as among the worst states for gay men and women too. The state has passed a constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage. State legislators ratified an amendment that voters approved in November. South Carolina joins an illustrious group of at least 26 other homophobic places, er, states, that have altered their state constitutions to enshrine discrimination. Way to go democratic process!

Pretty soon the only people welcome in South Carolina will be wealthy white straight men. Would, actually, would be a return to the good ol’ days for that heart of the confederacy, wouldn’t it?

Wealthy? South Carolina is one of the poorest states in the union. It’s also one of the blackest. It’s just that in the South, the more black people there are in a region, the more its white population will vote Republican.

Yes, South Carolina is poor, but their policies are driving out the poor, the black, the female, etc. pretty soon all that’ll be left will be three rich white guys.

Or so we could hope. Truth is, leaving is hard (financially and otherwise), and people stay put.

sorry South Carolina cant be like the opened minded, diseased ridden, over taxed underrepresented ,crime ridden, rat holes like Massachusetts, or Conn or New Jersey. South Carolina is not the poorest of the southern states that honor goes to Lousiana thanks in part to New Orleans and the enslaving welfare system. Driving out women, blacks , the poor? and what are the enlightened enclaves of the north doing for anyone except slinging feel good platitudes? You people are pathetic.

solorunner – i thought about not responding to your comment because clearly you don’t care to engage in any real conversation but i would like to point to two big things NY is doing to support the poor community:

1) state public funding for abortions and
2) more generous (than the fed) welfare policies that do not have a time cap.

How do you like them apples?
