I Heart Wisconsin (and not just their Cheddar)

I am feeling a lot of Badger love today. Wisconsin has become the fifth state to turn down federal abstinence only (Title V) funding.

The Madison Capital Times has the details:

Wisconsin will turn down roughly $600,000 in federal abstinence education funding rather than comply with new rules banning a comprehensive approach to pregnancy prevention, said Stephanie Marquis of the Department of Health and Family Services.

Wisconsin is now the fifth state to reject receipt of Title 5 abstinence-only-before-marriage funds for Fiscal Year 2007.

Marquis said Title V funding recipients have in the past had discretion in how they fashioned their programs. But new federal rules require that these programs teach, among other things, that “sexual activity outside of the context of marriage is likely to have harmful psychological and physical effects.”

Lon Newman, executive director of the Wausau-based Family Planning Health Services, applauded the governor’s decision to reject these directives.

“It’s great to have an administration committed to public health and reducing health care disparities and that has a commitment to women’s reproductive health care,” Newman said.

Yep, that pretty much says it all.
