Read This: Pregnancy Behind Bars Can Lead to Heartbreak

It’s not often that newspapers (particularly in the reddest states) publish “good” articles about pregnancy and birth (i.e. articles that are sensitive about the complexity of pregnancy and motherhood, the special needs of women who battle addiction, and the rights and considerations of women who are incarcerated.

This article from yesterday’s Kansas City Star is one of those rare good articles (PDF).

It’s not ideal — it doesn’t express outrage, or go to bat for incarcerated women’s rights or reproductive rights. But it’s far more balanced and open than many of the articles I’ve seen.

It’s so sad how happy I am with mediocrity.

Bean, I can’t imagine your being happy with mediocrity. Perhaps it is just being happy with any accomplishment, no matter how modest, because progress is so scarce these days.
