Update: How the Media Deals With the 51% of Us Who Do Not Live With A Spouse

Via Jessica at Feministing, NBC’s headline about yesterday’s news that 51% of adult women now live without a spouse.

I’m with Jessica on this one — what exactly is it that men should be worried about? Feminist women who spurn them? Maybe it’s a sign to men that they need to be stepping up to the plate and accepting a more modern vision of family life….just a thought.

hi, just wanted to let you know that the most recent issue of BUST magazine (Feb/Mar) has an article on the phenomenon of media scare tactics targeted towards single women. It’s entitled “Tales from the dating crypt” and basically the author exposes all the overblown statistics about how hard it is for older/smarter/wealthier/more educated women to get a guy. It was interesting to read, and made me realize I do actually have some of those stereotypes in my head! Kablam! (that’s the sound of a myth being busted.)

Thanks for the heads up. I will be sure to check it out.

And I like your sound effect for a myth being busted. Captures the impact perfectly.

I think it was Gordo who noted, “What’s the big difference between now and when 49% of American women were unmarried?”.

The difference is that single women were (still are!) considered abnormal, especially as they age. When the so-called abnormal make up the majority, it’s high time we reconsider the hegemony of the norm.

My take: traditional marriage – i.e. where the man brings home the bacon and the woman takes care of the home – is a prison for men and even more so for women. That’s not breaking news. But with single women in the majority – along with non-married couples generally – women and men both may finally do something about it.
