Family Planning Is a Family Value

I have taken to wearing my Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC) button on the bag I carry to school. The button reads: “pro-faith, pro-family, pro-choice.” Sometimes I get funny looks from people who think that pro-family must mean pro-traditional family structures, which it doesn’t at all. But the religious right has so coopted the term “family” (not to mention “faith”), that I’m not at all surprised the pin elicits such reactions.

That’s why I was thrilled to see Cristina Page’s (author of How the Pro-Choice Movement Saved America) column on TomPaine today, “Family Planning Is Family Values.”

Check out the article. It’s an important catalyst for thinking about how we can reclaim our values and the words used to describe them.
