Some Thoughts on Jose Padilla.

The NY Times ran an article the other day chronicling the treatment of Jose Padilla while he was detained at a military brig in South Carolina for three years (he has since been charged with criminal offenses and moved to a normal jail).

Whenever Padilla – who is, remember, an AMERICAN citizen who had not yet been charged with any crime – was transported anywhere, it looked like this:

But that’s not the worst part. He was treated even less humanely while in his cell. The Times article lists several aspects of his treatment, including that he was sensorily deprived, was denied Halal food. He now suffers from physical problems and emotional problems including facial tics and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

And he has still not been tried – nevermind convicted – of anything. Bitch PhD. has a great post up about this that says pretty much everything that I’ve been thinking about this, but have been too disturbed to type up.
